On December 3, Qualcom announced its next flagship Snapdragon 865 processor.
And the next day introduced the characteristics and features of the chip.
The Snapdragon 865 promises a wide range of improvements over existing chips, especially in performance, AI processing, photos and games.
Inside is the new 8-core Kryo 585 processor. Four Cortex-A77 cores, four Cortex-A55. The most powerful core runs at 2.84 GHz, the other three at 2.4 GHz and the last four at 1.8 GHz.
The processor is 25 percent faster and more energy efficient than last year’s Snapdragon 855. The Adreno 650 GPU is also 25 percent more productive than its predecessor.
The growth is not so significant compared to the previous generation, when the Snapdragon 855 was 40 percent faster than 845.
Surprisingly, the Snapdragon 865 does not have a modem for communication at all. In the Snapdragon 855, it was an X24 with LTE connectivity – if the manufacturer wanted 5G, it was necessary to install an additional X50 modem.
Now you will definitely have to install a separate X55 modem with support for 5G networks. The download speed with such a chip can reach 7 Gbit / second (the previous generation developed a speed of 5 Gbit).
Moreover, the X55 supports a wider 5G frequency range, especially in the range below 6 GHz. Qualcom claims the X55 is its first modem to “support all key areas and ranges, including mmWave and sub-6 on TDD and FDD frequencies.”
Declared support for two eSIM. Snapdragon 865 will support Wi-Fi 6 standard.
Snapdragon 865 is equipped with a new image processor – Spectra 480. The chip is capable of processing images at a speed of 2 GB / s. According to the company, this will achieve better results in the shooting.
Smartphones with Snapdragon 865 will be able to take 200-megapixel photos, shoot 8K video and slow-motion at 960 frames per second in 720p resolution. In addition, the new processor will support video capture with Dolby Vision HDR, a first for mobile devices.
The fifth-generation Qualcom AI Engine chip is installed in the Snapdragon 865. It surpasses its predecessor twice, the efficiency is higher by 35%. Its capabilities are limited, first of all, by developers and manufacturers. According to the company, it is they who should look for AI applications.
Also added is the new Qualcom Sensing Hub, which is designed for things like monitoring the wakefulness of voice assistants.
For fans of mobile gaming, Qualcom has prepared two important innovations. Firstly, the processor now supports displays with a refresh rate of up to 144 Hz. Secondly, the company will allow OEMs to upgrade Adreno GPUs through application stores, allowing players to update firmware, like for computer GPUs.
